Maths tutor Adelaide for Years 8–12

One-to-one maths tuition that starts with understanding

Maths tuition for secondary students in Years 8–12, with support based on the concepts they are learning, the areas they find difficult and any gaps in foundational skills.

Maths support based on where the student is now

Students can find mathematics difficult for many different reasons. Sometimes the challenge is a current topic. In other cases, an earlier concept has not been fully understood and that gap makes later work increasingly difficult.

My first priority is to understand where the student is currently at.

Maths tuition at Bits and Bots Learning is provided one-to-one, allowing us to focus on the individual student's needs rather than working through a standard program. We can look at what they are covering at school, identify concepts that need more explanation and revisit foundational skills where necessary.

For SACE students, tuition follows the SACE curriculum closely and can support the mathematics they are currently studying at school.

Maths tuition for Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12

Maths tuition is available for secondary students across Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12.

For students in Years 8–10, support can focus on current school mathematics, concepts they are finding difficult and gaps in earlier learning that may be affecting their progress.

For students in Years 11–12, tuition can work closely with their current SACE Mathematics learning and the areas where they need further explanation or practice.

A student may come because one particular topic has become difficult, because earlier mathematical foundations need strengthening or simply because they benefit from additional time working through concepts and questions one-to-one.

The starting point is the individual student rather than an assumed level based only on their year group.

What we can work on in maths tuition

The content of each student's tuition depends on their school learning and the areas where support is needed.

Current mathematical concepts

We can work through concepts the student is currently covering at school, providing another explanation and additional opportunities to practise.

If they bring school materials or specific questions, these can help guide what we focus on during the session.

Gaps in foundational skills

Sometimes difficulty with a current topic points back to an earlier area of mathematics.

When that happens, we can step back and work on the underlying concept before returning to the more advanced material. Strengthening those foundations can make it easier for the student to understand how later mathematical ideas fit together.

Problem solving and working through questions

Maths is not only about knowing a formula or procedure. Students also need to interpret questions, decide how to approach them and work through the steps involved.

One-to-one tuition gives us time to examine that process and identify where the student is becoming stuck.

SACE Mathematics

For students in Years 11 and 12, tuition can follow the relevant SACE Mathematics curriculum closely.

Support is based on what the student is studying and the mathematical areas where they need further explanation or practice.

How maths tuition starts

I start by finding out what the student is currently working on and where they feel they need help.

If there is a specific school topic or piece of work causing difficulty, we can begin there. As we work through questions, it often becomes clearer whether the issue relates to the current concept or an earlier foundation that needs attention.

From there, sessions can combine school materials with resources I provide.

This makes the tuition responsive to what is happening in the student's mathematics learning rather than following the same predetermined sequence for everyone.

Working alongside school and SACE learning

Maths tuition is designed to support a student's existing secondary school mathematics rather than replace what is happening in the classroom.

For Years 8–10, the focus can move between current school topics and earlier mathematical foundations according to the student's needs.

For Years 11–12, tuition can work closely with SACE Mathematics content and the material the student is covering at school.

Students can bring their schoolwork and questions to a session. I also use my own materials where additional explanation or practice is useful.

This connection to current learning helps keep tuition focused on the mathematical concepts most relevant to the student at that point in time.

Frequently asked questions about maths tuition

Who is maths tuition at Bits and Bots Learning for?

Maths tuition is available for secondary students in Years 8–12. It can support students who are finding particular concepts difficult, have gaps in foundational mathematical skills or need additional help with the mathematics they are currently studying at school.

How does one-to-one maths tuition work?

I begin with the student's current school learning and the areas where they need help. We can work through school materials and questions, revisit earlier concepts where there are gaps and use additional material when further explanation or practice is useful.

What can students work on during maths tuition?

The focus depends on the individual student. Sessions can cover current mathematical concepts, foundational skills, problem solving and schoolwork. For students completing SACE Mathematics, tuition follows the relevant SACE curriculum closely.

Which year levels do you tutor in maths?

Maths tuition is available for Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 students at Bits and Bots Learning in Panorama, Adelaide.

Can you help if my child has gaps from earlier years?

Yes. If an earlier mathematical concept is contributing to difficulty with current work, we can revisit that foundation before moving back to the student's present topic.

Can students bring their school maths work?

Yes. Current school materials and questions can be used during tuition so we can focus on the areas the student is working on and finding difficult.

Do you provide SACE maths tuition?

Yes. Maths tuition is available for Years 11–12 students, with SACE tuition following the relevant curriculum closely and supporting the mathematics being studied at school.

Is maths tuition one-to-one?

Yes. Maths tuition is provided one-to-one, allowing sessions to focus on the individual student's current understanding and learning needs.
